What a password-protected PDF is
A password-protected PDF stays a normal PDF, with one extra lock. The file is encrypted, and a reader must type the open password before the pages appear. Without that password the document stays unreadable.
How to password-protect a PDF
- Drop the PDF into the box above, or browse for it.
- Check the file name and size.
- Enter a password of at least 8 characters, then enter it again.
- Choose Protect PDF and wait for the file to finish.
- Download the new PDF and open it once to confirm the password works.
Why PDF password protection is useful
People email contracts, mark sheets, and client files all the time. A password keeps a copy that lands in the wrong inbox from being opened by whoever receives it. It is a simple lock for a file you are about to send, not a substitute for sharing the password on a separate channel.
What happens when a PDF is protected
The tool reads the PDF, checks that it is a real file and that it does not already have a password, then encrypts it with AES-256. You download a new file. The original upload and the password are discarded when processing finishes. They are not published and they are not written into the page address.
How to create a strong PDF password
Length matters more than clever substitutions. Use at least 12 characters when you can, and mix upper and lower case letters, numbers, and a symbol. A short phrase you can remember, with a number that is not your birth year, is stronger than a single dictionary word. Store it in a password manager. The strength hint on this page is guidance only: any password of 8 characters or more is accepted.
What happens if the password is forgotten
We never keep a copy of the password, so a forgotten password cannot be looked up, reset, or mailed back to you. Before you delete the unprotected original, open the downloaded file and confirm you can unlock it. If you still have the original PDF, you can protect it again with a new password.
Frequently asked questions
What is a PDF password protector?
A PDF password protector adds a password that someone must enter before the file opens. This page creates that open password with AES-256 encryption and gives you the new file to download.
Does the password stay on your server?
No. The password is used only while the PDF is encrypted, then discarded. It is not saved in a database, written to logs, or added to the download link.
Can I protect a PDF that already asks for a password?
No. Upload a PDF that opens without a password. If the file is already encrypted, the tool stops and leaves it unchanged.
What if I forget the password?
Keep the password somewhere you control, such as a password manager. We do not store it, so we cannot open the file for you later or replace a forgotten password.
How large can the PDF be?
Up to 10 MB. Larger files are refused before encryption starts.
Will this stop someone from printing or copying the PDF?
No. This version only adds the password required to open the file. It does not set print, copy, or edit restrictions.
