Word Counter

Whether you're hitting a 500-word assignment limit, a social media character cap or an SEO content brief, you need exact counts. This counter tracks words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences and paragraphs live as you type, and estimates reading time (200 wpm) and speaking time (150 wpm). No signup, no uploads — everything runs in your browser.

Speaking time

Reading time assumes 200 words per minute; speaking time assumes 150 words per minute.

How it works

Counts are computed with simple, transparent rules:

  • Words: the text is trimmed and split on any whitespace run — so multiple spaces, tabs and newlines never inflate the count.
  • Characters: every character including spaces and line breaks; characters (no spaces) strips all whitespace first.
  • Sentences: the text is split on . ! ? … and non-empty fragments are counted.
  • Paragraphs: the text is split on blank-line runs and non-empty blocks are counted.
  • Reading time: words ÷ 200 wpm; speaking time: words ÷ 150 wpm, shown as minutes and seconds.

Worked example

Paste The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs. You'll see 17 words, 2 sentences, 1 paragraph, and a reading time of about 0 min 5 sec (17 ÷ 200 × 60 ≈ 5 seconds).

Understanding your results

The stat cards update with every keystroke. Words is what most limits (assignments, articles, meta descriptions) are measured in; characters (no spaces) matches how many platforms count; reading time helps you size blog posts (a 1,000-word post is ~5 minutes); speaking time helps you plan talks and voiceovers.

Frequently asked questions

Text is split on whitespace — spaces, tabs and newlines. Hyphenated words like 'state-of-the-art' count as one word; numbers count as words too.
