BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening measure that relates your weight to your height. It doesn't diagnose health on its own, but it's the standard first check used worldwide to flag whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height.

Your BMI

24.22

kg/m²

WHO category
Normal weight
Healthy weight range for your height
53.5 – 72.0 kg

Informational only — not medical advice. BMI is a screening tool with known limitations. Consult a doctor for health decisions.

How it works

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)2

WHO categories for adults: under 18.5 is Underweight, 18.5–24.9 is Normal weight, 25–29.9 is Overweight, and 30 or above is Obese. These cut-offs were set for adult populations and are a screening tool, not a diagnosis.

Worked example

A person who is 170 cm tall and weighs 70 kg:

  • Height in metres = 1.70
  • BMI = 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2
  • Category: Normal weight (18.5–24.9)
  • Healthy range for 170 cm: 53.5 – 72.0 kg

Understanding your results

Your BMI is the headline number; the category tells you where it sits on the WHO scale. The healthy weight range shows the weights that would put you in the normal band at your height.

Limitations worth knowing: BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes can read as "overweight" while being very fit. It also isn't calibrated for children, pregnant women, or the elderly. Treat it as a starting point for a conversation with a doctor, not a verdict.
