Average Calculator

The average (arithmetic mean) is the single number that best represents a list of values — total divided by how many there are. Paste or type your numbers separated by commas, spaces or line breaks, and this calculator returns the mean instantly, along with the total and the count it used.

Separate numbers with commas, spaces or new lines. Use plain digits — no currency symbols.

How it works

The arithmetic mean is the sum of all values divided by how many there are:

Average = (x1 + x2 + … + xn) ÷ n

Every value counts equally. That equal weighting is both the strength of the average (simple, familiar) and its weakness (one extreme outlier drags it around).

Worked example

Scores of 10, 20 and 30:

  • Sum = 10 + 20 + 30 = 60
  • Count = 3
  • Average = 60 ÷ 3 = 20

Understanding your results

Average is the mean of your list. Total and count are shown so you can sanity-check the input — if the count looks wrong, a stray character probably split a number in two.

Before trusting an average, glance at the spread: if one value dwarfs the rest (a billionaire in a room of interns), the median describes the "typical" value better. This calculator intentionally keeps it simple — it computes the mean, nothing fancier.

Frequently asked questions

Average and mean are the same thing here: sum divided by count. The median is the middle value when sorted — it's less affected by outliers. For 1, 2, 3, 4, 100, the mean is 22 but the median is 3.
