GST Calculator

GST (Goods and Services Tax) in India is charged at 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% or 28% depending on the goods or service. This calculator adds GST to a base price (exclusive) or pulls the GST component out of a GST-inclusive price — handy for invoices, quotations and checking bills.

Price type

GST amount

₹180

Total (inclusive of GST)
₹1,180

Estimates only. GST slabs and rules are set by the GST Council and can change — verify the applicable rate for your HSN/SAC code. This is not tax advice.

How it works

Two directions, one idea — GST is always a percentage of the base price:

Exclusive: GST = Price × Rate ÷ 100 · Total = Price + GST

Inclusive: GST = Price × Rate ÷ (100 + Rate) · Base = Price − GST

The inclusive formula works because the GST-inclusive price equals base × (1 + rate ÷ 100); solving for the tax component gives rate ÷ (100 + rate) of the total.

Worked example

At an 18% slab:

  • Exclusive: base price ₹1,000 → GST = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180, total = ₹1,180
  • Inclusive: billed price ₹1,180 → GST = 1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹180, base = ₹1,000

Notice both directions agree — a useful cross-check when verifying an invoice.

Understanding your results

GST amount is the tax component at the selected slab. Total (inclusive of GST) is what the customer actually pays — for exclusive mode it's base + GST; for inclusive mode it's the price you entered, with the base shown implicitly.

Use exclusive mode when quoting ("₹1,000 + GST") and inclusive mode when reverse-checking a bill that already includes tax.

Frequently asked questions

Exclusive means tax is added on top of the quoted price (₹1,000 + 18% GST = ₹1,180). Inclusive means the quoted price already contains the tax — you extract the GST component with the inclusive formula instead of adding it.
