How it works

New regime, FY 2025-26:

Taxable income = Gross salary − ₹75,000

  • ₹0–4 lakh: 0% · ₹4–8 lakh: 5% · ₹8–12 lakh: 10%
  • ₹12–16 lakh: 15% · ₹16–20 lakh: 20% · ₹20–24 lakh: 25% · above ₹24 lakh: 30%

Rebate u/s 87A: tax = ₹0 if taxable income ≤ ₹12,00,000 · Cess = 4% of tax

Worked example

Gross salary ₹15,00,000:

  • Taxable income = 15,00,000 − 75,000 = ₹14,25,000
  • Slab tax = 20,000 (5% slab) + 40,000 (10% slab) + 33,750 (15% slab) = ₹93,750
  • No rebate (taxable income exceeds ₹12 lakh)
  • Cess = 4% of 93,750 = ₹3,750 → Total tax = ₹97,500
  • Effective rate = 97,500 ÷ 15,00,000 = 6.5%

Understanding your results

Total tax payable includes the 4% health & education cess — it's the number that actually leaves your pocket. Taxable income is your salary after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Effective tax rate spreads the tax over your full salary, which is the fair way to compare regimes.

If your taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, the 87A rebate wipes the tax to zero — but note this estimate does not model marginal relief just above the threshold, where real liability phases in gradually.

Frequently asked questions

The new regime has lower slab rates but almost no deductions (no 80C, no HRA, no 80D). The old regime has higher rates but lets you claim deductions. Which is better depends entirely on how much you can claim — compare both before choosing.
