ROI Calculator

ROI (Return on Investment) tells you how much profit an investment made relative to what you put in. Enter what you paid and what it's worth now to get the profit (or loss) and the ROI percentage — the simplest profitability yardstick there is.

ROI

50.00%

Profit relative to cost.

Profit / loss
₹50,000

Simple estimate for comparison only. ROI ignores time, risk and taxes. This is not investment advice.

How it works

ROI compares the gain to the original outlay:

ROI = (Current value − Cost) ÷ Cost × 100

A positive ROI means profit; a negative ROI means loss. For an honest number, use your all-in cost — include brokerage, fees and taxes paid, not just the headline price.

Worked example

Bought for ₹1,00,000, now worth ₹1,50,000:

  • Profit = 1,50,000 − 1,00,000 = ₹50,000
  • ROI = 50,000 ÷ 1,00,000 × 100 = 50%

If it were worth only ₹80,000 instead, the ROI would be −20% — a ₹20,000 loss.

Understanding your results

ROI is the headline percentage — 50% means you made half your investment back as profit. Profit / loss is the same result in rupees, which is what actually matters to your wallet.

ROI's blind spot is time: 50% in one year is excellent, 50% over ten years is poor. For multi-year investments, convert to CAGR to compare fairly.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on risk and time. Beating a safe benchmark (like an FD rate, annualised) for the same period is a reasonable bar for low-risk money; equities are judged against market indices over the same horizon. There is no universal 'good' number.
