PPF Calculator

The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is India's flagship tax-free savings scheme: government-backed, with an attractive interest rate and EEE tax status. It has a 15-year lock-in, extendable in 5-year blocks. Enter your yearly deposit, the interest rate and the duration to project your maturity value, total invested and interest earned.

PPF allows deposits between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000 per financial year.

The government revises the PPF rate every quarter. Default assumes 7.1% p.a. stays constant — update it to the current notified rate.

15-year lock-in; extendable in blocks of 5 years.

Maturity value

₹40,68,209

Tax-free payout at the end of the duration.

Total invested
₹22,50,000
Interest earned (tax-free)
₹18,18,209

Estimates only. The PPF interest rate is revised by the government every quarter — this calculator defaults to 7.1% p.a. and assumes it stays constant. Verify the current notified rate before relying on the result. Not financial advice.

How it works

PPF interest is credited annually. Assuming each year's deposit is made at the start of the financial year (so it earns interest for the full year), the maturity uses the annuity-due formula:

FV = D × (((1 + r)n − 1) ÷ r) × (1 + r)

  • D — yearly deposit
  • r — annual interest rate as a decimal (rate ÷ 100)
  • n — number of years

Deposit before 5 April each year to earn interest for the whole financial year — deposits made later earn interest only from the month of deposit.

Worked example

Deposit ₹1,50,000 per year at 7.1% per annum for 15 years:

  • (1.071)15 ≈ 2.7982
  • FV = 1,50,000 × ((2.7982 − 1) ÷ 0.071) × 1.071 = ₹40,68,209
  • Total invested = 1,50,000 × 15 = ₹22,50,000
  • Interest earned = 40,68,209 − 22,50,000 = ₹18,18,209 — entirely tax-free

Understanding your results

Maturity value is your tax-free payout at the end of the duration. Total invested is your own deposits; interest earned is the tax-free growth — and because PPF is EEE, you also got a Section 80C deduction on the deposits.

The single biggest lever is depositing early in the financial year: money deposited before 5 April earns interest for all 12 months. If you can only save monthly, that's fine — but a lump deposit in April beats twelve monthly ones.
